forest friends makingforliving

I designed these little felt forest friends as key rings or pencil toppers and they’d be great back to school gifts or even welcomed as stocking stuffers, if you are planning ahead! They feature in my book.

You’ll need: Felt, embroidery thread, beads, buttons, ric rac, leather pieces, swivel clip and ribbon or pencil, printable templates (woodland animals), scissors, needle, pin, fabric glue.

Hugo the Hedgehog

Pin your Hugo template to a large felt piece folded in half and cut two hedgehog spiky bodies. Cut the rest of your pieces of felt using the templates. Stitch the round body shape to one of the spike shapes, stitching on your button feet as you go. Place a white eye shape on Hugo then stitch on light brown eyes with beads to the body. Stitch on a brown nose using two little stitches as nostrils. Using a darker thread, stitch a small smile, then stitch the two body shapes together, either stitching in the ribbon threaded through the swivel clip, at the top, or leaving a gap at the bottom for a pencil.

Fergal the Fox

Pin your fox template to a large felt piece folded in half and cut two fox bodies. Cut the rest of your pieces of felt using the templates. Cut two tail and tail tip pieces. Cut a nose and ear triangles from a leather piece. Sew the breast piece on one fox body then sew the eye pieces using the same white thread, sew the brown eyes on using a small cross stitch. Stick on the ear and nose pieces using fabric glue. Stitch on the tail piece and then the tail top. On your other fox body stitch on your second tail and tail top piece. Stitch the two bodies insides together leaving a gap at the bottom for the pencil topper or stitching in the ribbon threaded through the swivel clip at the top of the fox, for the bag charm.

Oaklee the Owl

Pin your owl template to a large felt piece folded in half and cut two owl bodies. Cut the rest of your pieces of felt using the templates. Place the breast piece on one owl body and sew some ric rac ribbon onto the breast piece in place on the owl body. Place the light brown eye shape onto the body and sew on the darker brown circles. Then sew through the white inner circles and thread on a bead and stitch back through the white circles. Using a darker thread, sew on the inner side of the wings using back stitch to get a line, then sew on the beak. Using a darker thread, stitch the two body shapes together, either stitching in the ribbon threaded through the swivel clip, at the top, or leaving a gap at the bottom for a pencil.
